The Power of Serving

639 Volunteers. 33 Projects. 1 City. Every year, the Hoboken community comes together to take part in 1Day. It’s a day when volunteers from all different walks of life reach out their hands, and their hearts, to enhance the community and serve those who live here. The moment the volunteers began to pour into the gym for registration Saturday morning, […]

A Retreat for Mind, Body, and Soul

When Deb and Roger Andruss joined one of the largest mission organizations in the world a decade ago, transitioning from church ministry to providing pastoral care on a global level, they noticed something amiss: Countless missionaries and church staff they met were abandoning their calling due to feelings of burnout and disillusionment.

Life Is Punny (Fun Intended)

If you’ve checked out any of Hoboken Grace’s events, you’ve most likely seen titles like “Mission Imbocceball” and “Game of Throws” in the Facebook event descriptions, followed by even more wordplay. Why use puns to invite people? And how did this all start? The Writing Team recently sat down with Anna, the creative mind behind the event puns, to ask […]

An Egg Hunt To Remember

The Hoboken Grace Easter Egg Hunt is a short six weeks away. This is the perfect time to reflect on last year’s hunt, which was epic. To set the stage, Hoboken received over a foot of snow on the Monday before the hunt. In partnership with the Hoboken Housing Authority, we worked to plow the field to make the hunt […]

Worship Night…Is All Music?

Once a year we take a night to free ourselves of distraction and spend time with God. What is it and why do we do this? For some, hearing that music can act as “worship” might be confusing, and for others, it may be a habit that isn’t given much thought. So, why is it that we sing on Sundays? Why is music part of what we do?

How a Gift Exchange Grew From One Person to 2,000

The Hoboken Christmas Exchange started with a simple desire to give. Kara had been looking to donate some baby items, but she was unsure how to get them into the hands of a family in need. Her search led her to not one, but several families that fit the description. They needed other basic items as well: sheets, kitchenware, pajamas, shoes.

‘It’s Our Chance to Love the Community Back’

“We’ve lived in Hoboken three years and we love it,” Theresa said. “God loves us really well and it’s our chance to love the community back. This is a corner of the city that we are going to pass every day, and the kids will know that we helped make it beautiful.” That, at its core, is what 1Day is all about.

The Lasting Effect of 1Day

We spend a lot of time talking about 1Day, a day when we come together to complete as many projects as possible around town. It’s true that we serve for only a few hours, but the results last much longer. I had the privilege of leading TRUE Mentors a few years ago when 1Day volunteers helped with a project. A […]

A Community Impact

In this ever-growing, ever-changing city, an annual event has taken root. For the past seven years, hundreds of people have come together in the name of community and love for a citywide day of service. Last year, local parks, businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations all felt the love as 400 volunteers banded together to create the largest 1Day ever! Hoboken […]

A Summer to Celebrate

At Hoboken Grace, we kicked off the summer with a series to do just that. "Celebrating Summer" asked what it would look like if this summer could be your best summer yet. With Labor Day marking summer's (unofficial) end earlier this week, we thought it was time we looked back at the summer we had at Hoboken Grace and reflect on all that there is to celebrate.

Looking Up

Try as we might to grow closer to God, our daily whirlwind of responsibilities and distractions often pulls us in other directions. But what if you set aside several days to simply experience His presence? Next month, you’ll have the opportunity to do just that. Join us for Axiom: Pilgrimage from August 6-10. This wilderness retreat will take you deep into […]

That Time We Almost Got Arrested

How can we serve our city in creative ways? That’s the question we asked that almost got us arrested. We were trying anything and everything we could to serve, so when we heard there were movies at the park every Wednesday, we jumped on the opportunity. We could go down and hand out free water bottles to everyone who was […]

If Our July 4th Party Were Reviewed On Yelp

As we roasted under the summer sun, everyone broke a sweat competing in a cornhole competition for the ages. Fun, new friends, and food were in abundance, so much so, even the birds wanted in on the action. But, don't take our word for it - here are some "Yelp Reviews" from the folks who were there.

Finding Him in the Quiet

“God is always there — it is our busyness that makes us blind. When we stay quiet, we will be able to find Him.” For Xiaochan, this quote from Hoboken Grace’s Axiom retreat exemplified the entire experience. Those who attended say the retreat brought them rest, clarity, and a greater sense of God’s love and how He sees them.

Summer at the Movies

Just like that long-awaited sequel, Hoboken Grace is back at the movies this summer – Movies Under the Stars, that is. A group will be handing out popcorn at the city’s free movie screening at Pier A each Wednesday night, starting June 20. The summer series kicked off this week.
