It’s funny to think back to a time when social media wasn’t a huge part of most people’s lives. Now, everyone I know has some sort of social media account — even my mom has a Facebook page.
I remember the first time I heard the word Facebook. I was in college and my roommate introduced me to the site. It was the latest and greatest thing everyone in college was into. It was cool to log on and catch up with old high school friends and post pictures, but I never in a million years thought it would be something I would use for anything substantial.
Since my college days, the reasons I use social media have drastically changed. I went from using it as just a digital yearbook to using it for networking, work, entertainment — basically everything. As I found myself sharing life’s big and small moments, the accomplishments and even sometimes tough times, I found that I was able to connect with people I knew and didn’t know just based on what I posted.
Social media can be an interesting — you can find every viewpoint, emotion, opinion, etc. So when God led me to the Social Media Team, I prayed that above all else He would allow me to be able to communicate His love and grace.
Over this past year, He’s shown me that whether it’s through a picture, a story or a comment, I’m able to not only share the amazing things He’s doing in the Hoboken Grace community but also provide hope and encouragement to people I’ve never even met before. That might mean helping someone who’s checking out Hoboken Grace for the first time get a sense of what service is like on Sunday mornings. It also might mean asking how we can pray for someone, or highlighting some of the many growth opportunities available.
Going back to my days in college, I would’ve never pictured being able to use Facebook to reach others that way. But as Isaiah 55:8 says, “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” Over the years, He’s proven this to be true. He’s shown me time and time again that he can work through anyone and anything — even on social media.
