A Lifetime Journey: Tom’s Baptism Story

Story Team

Q1: What was the feeling like after you were baptized?

It was very special. This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time. My wife Betzy and I celebrated all afternoon with our daughter and friends.

Q2: Who was up there with you?

My wife, Betzy and I were baptized together that day, which made it super special. We were accompanied by our daughter, our dinner group, and some other special friends. And we found out later our families were streaming online!

Q3: For another Hoboken Grace community member who may be thinking about taking this step, what would you say to them?

I love that no one ever pressured me to be baptized. Hoboken Grace always made me feel like there was an open invitation for me when the time was right. I had been feeling the nudge for over a year and a half but I was being held back by pride and fear. As I look back, I could feel the spirit chipping away at those obstacles until finally they vanished and were replaced with a strong desire to be baptized.

Q4: What made you take the step of baptism?

This has been a lifetime journey for me. I felt the nudge as a teenager, but never followed through. Then I entered a very long period of agnosticism when I completely rejected the church. For the past three years, I’ve been regularly attending Hoboken Grace and as we moved through each series so many of my longstanding questions were answered. I became more involved in the community and that has coincided with some pretty serious changing on the inside. This change was only made possible through the love of Jesus and His spirit so baptism felt like the obvious next step.
